What people get wrong
Each of these costs a candidate either money or a test date.
- edTPA is no longer required. New York’s Board of Regents eliminated it on 27 April 2022 and moved the performance assessment into preparation programs. Much of the web still says otherwise.
- There is no dedicated Multi-Subject CST for this certificate yet, so NYSED accepts the Childhood, Middle Childhood or Secondary version. Pick the band you are most comfortable with.
- The Early Childhood (Birth-Grade 2) Multi-Subject is explicitly NOT accepted for this certificate. Sitting it does not satisfy the requirement.
Required, but not an exam
- A bachelor’s degree and a registered preparation program, or an approved alternative route
- A teacher performance assessment, now embedded in the program rather than sat as a state exam
- DASA training, Child Abuse Identification, and School Violence Prevention (SAVE)
- Fingerprint clearance and a TEACH account
