Each of these costs a candidate either money or a test date.
- South Carolina is unusual in accepting BOTH English tests: Content Knowledge (5038) at 167 or Content and Analysis (5039) at 168. Six other states accept only 5039, so a score earned here may not travel.

- An approved educator preparation program, or an approved alternative route
- Background check and application through the SCDE certification office
