What people get wrong
Each of these costs a candidate either money or a test date.
- West Virginia gives you three separate routes through the four elementary content areas, and they do not cost the same. The Fundamentals route asks for 152, 152, 147 and 143. The 5001 route asks for 157, 157, 155 and 159. On paper the Fundamentals route is the easier target by a wide margin.
- The rule that decides your route: you may mix and match between the 5001 series and the CKT series to cover the four areas, but assessments from the Fundamentals route cannot be combined with any other option. Fundamentals is all four or none. Pick your route before you book anything, because a single Fundamentals subtest sat by mistake cannot be paired with the rest.
- The reading test is not optional and not part of any route. TREE 5205 at 159 sits on top of whichever content route you choose, because the Third Grade Success Act requires it for the K-6 and the K-4 endorsement. Candidates holding the Reading Specialist endorsement who passed 5302 are exempt.
- West Virginia accepts the Praxis Bridge on some tests and not others, and the directory prints a yes or no for every single one. If you land within one standard error of measurement below the cut, Bridge lets you complete an ETS learning module and earn an "alt pass" instead of retaking the whole test. Check the column before you rebook, because a retake you did not need is a month you did not need to spend.
- Every West Virginia chart prints a second, higher number labelled "+2 SEM". That is not a harder passing score. It is the score that lets you ADD an endorsement to a certificate you already hold through the content proficiency route, without going back through a preparation program. If you are already licensed, that column is the one worth aiming at.
- The PLT is not the only way through. Candidates who finished a WVBE-approved program and passed an approved Teacher Performance Assessment after 12 July 2023 are exempt from the PLT. Out-of-state candidates get a real choice here: the PLT leads to a Non-Transferable certificate, while an approved TPA leads to a Professional certificate that transfers.
- West Virginia puts a ten year clock on test scores. Scores older than that must meet current requirements, though they stay valid if the state has not changed the test or the cut since you sat it. Pre-professional skills scores are exempt from the clock entirely.
Required, but not an exam
- A bachelor’s degree
- A WVBE-approved preparation program, or an approved alternative route
- The pre-professional skills requirement, which a long list of ACT, SAT, GRE and coursework routes can waive
- Background check and application through WVDE
Now go pass them.
Knowing the list is the easy part. Built To Pass teaches the strategy layer that works on any of these, aimed at the domains where you are actually losing points.
